Local Area Information

The Villa is close to the historic town of Agde. There are many varied and interesting local attractions including :-

Agde is a hidden treasure of the area and is less crowded than the Riveria region, despite being as beautiful and boasting even betterbeaches! It is an ancient city with over 2,000 years of history. It was founded by the Greeks and is known as the Black Pearl of the Mediterraneanbecause of the volcanic rock on which it stands.  Its cathedral, Saint-Etienne, built in the 12th Century dominates its skyline.  Located near the estuary of the River Herault, the Canal du Midi and close to the beautiful golden sandy beaches of the Mediterranean it has great charm and has so much to enthrall visitors.


Being an ancient fishing port, Agde has many varied restaurants, often specialising in sea food.  Meals can be taken on the pretty river restaurant pontoons or in the medieval buildings of the narrow winding streets.


Along with the regular lively Thursday morning market you will find that during the summer the city is bustling with entertainment.  Art exhibitions, classical music in the catherdral, strolling jazz and rock bands, jousting on the River Herault and amazing firework displays.


Out and About


The beautiful beach at Le Grau d’Agde is only 3 km away and an easy ride along the riverside cycle path. Here you will find cafes, bars and restaurants. Have a go at jet-skiing, hire a boat and go up river or just laze on the beach. There is an interesting local market on Sunday mornings which is well worth a visit.


Canal du Midi – from Agde it is possible to take trips to the Etang du Thau, a tranquil salt-water lagoon, home of pink flamingoes and oyster beds.  Further along there is Sete and Meze with their seafood restaurants and pretty canals.


Further Afield

Although there is a lot to see and do within walking or cycling distance from the villa it is still advisable to have a car as there are so many places worth visiting all around. There are a host of beautiful beaches all along the coast.

Beziers - where you will find great shopping at the hypermarkets along the way.  Once in Beziers there are plenty of restaurants and pavement cafés and on Fridays there is a wonderful flower market.  In August there is a huge street party, ‘Féria’.

Vias - A family holiday resort with cafes, bars restaurants and Europark for a fun night out.

Le Cap d’Agde - Beaches, naturist beaches, harbour, waterside restaurants, golf, huge water-park ‘AquaLand’, boat trips, water sports, casino, nightclubs, discos etc.

Pézenas – known for its architecture and alleyways full of artisans also has the best street market in the region (Saturdays). Lovely restaurants, summer concerts and festivals.

Narbonne - Visit this town for its Roman ruins and Gothic cathedral.

Sete - A busy and interesting old harbour town with lots of seafood restaurants and the museum Paul Valery.

Montpelier - A dynamic and youthful university city. Great shops.

Carcassonne - don’t miss this! The largest walled city in Europe with wonderful medieval spectacles and performances during the summer.

Marseillan – a magical small town which retains the spirit of a traditional French village.




Golf - try the course at Cap d’Agde or St Thomas (Beziers).


Tennis courts – bookable at the local town hall (Marie) or Cap d’Agde tennis centre for courts and lessons


Horse riding – Portigran – bookable by the hour


Water sports  and Sailing - various opportunities at all beaches, ports and marinas.


Mountains – Drive inland for an hour and there are opportunities for hiking, canoeing and generally exploring the countryside.


Degustations (sampling of food and wine) there are several of wine estates (domains) to visit locally, often with free tastings. Try the villages of Bessan, Pomerols and Pinet.  This is the largest wine producing area in the world, remember!


Cycling - Bikes can be hired at various locations.


National Parks – clean free flowing rivers, gorges, lakes, lagoons, mountains and nature reserves all compete for your attention.
